I love all labs...American, British, and Irish. I train them all and recognize both their strengths and weaknesses, but for a family companion that also makes a "calm but ready" retriever, the British and Irish field trial lines are a good choice. Notice I said "calm" - there just seems to be a nice balance with these dogs. Not to say you can't find that in some American dogs as well, these traits of being a balanced family dog just seem go hand and hand with these British and Irish bloodlines.
At this time I do not own a stud dog, instead I look around the U.S., Ireland, and Britain for the best match I can find and then fly the frozen or chilled semen in or I transport my female to where the facility is and have her bred there. This helps me to provide the best traits possible for our puppies.

Jemma
Jemma is an Irish import that has a quiet soft temperament.
She is easy in every way, however she does love to work. I tell her “no” only once and she remembers.
She loves to retrieve on land and water and has a heavy thick coat and an athletic build with a well shaped head.

Maggie
Maggie has a nice build for upland hunting, long proportionate legs yet a handsome square head.
Maggie moves effortlessly across and through the fields.
She loves water as well but is a bit spoiled as she usually sleeps with one of our daughters.
